Bird Barrier

What are you doing?

What are you doing down there in the field, hu-dad?

We have given many of you the impression that hu-dad is a dog geek. But he is much more of a geek than that! He is also a weather geek. Sitting in the middle of our field is this:

our weather station

Our weather station. (Notice us supervising in the background.)

Now a weather station has electronics, a wireless transmitter to our home internet, a solar panel – lots of things that can wrong. But our technical issue at the moment is that birds are sitting on the rain collector. They are apparently well-fed birds. With lots of output, if you get our drift. And that sort of clogs up the rain collector.

dog yard pick up

And you complain about picking up in the dog yard!

So, the hu-dad decided to construct a bird barrier to prevent the social gatherings. Believe it or not, the internet has weather geek forums to share ideas of how to do things like that. And, of course, the hu-dad went to those sites, got some ideas, and went to work.

zip ties.

Some zip ties applied to the outside of the rain collector discourage the birds from landing.

kitchen strainer

Then a simple 6 inch kitchen strainer . . .

handles removed

. . . with the handles removed . . .

nice barrier

. . . creates a nice debris barrier for leaves and other trash (such as bird output!).

ready for the next storm

And the rain collector is ready for the next storm (which appears to be building in the background).

If you want to follow our weather live, we do have a widget on this page (though, because it is in flash, some devices can’t see it) or via our page at Weather Underground.

Oh, and if you are a weather geek, we are CWOP EW1053.

We ARE weather geeks, thanks to our the Luke… our interest started with him! We don’t have a weather station but would love to… And I guess what you are trying to create is an Anti-Tweet-No-Business Station!

    Love it!

Too bad cute birdies leave such a mess. Our beautiful old church has has to put spikes around all the porch roofs to keep bird poop off people and steps. (

How often must the strainer be emptied?)

Guess we will find out how often the strainer needs cleaning. Hopefully, the bird fence will discourage social gatherings and we will be ok with our quarterly cleanings.
