Princess Dakota
8/15/97 – 6/24/09
Frankly, when we began blogging the activities of The Herd, we thought it would be a fun hobby. It truly is.
What we did not expect was that we would form incredible friendships without actually meeting the other people and dogs in “real life.” So, we never had the opportunity to meet Dakota “in the fur.” But because of the connections of Cushings with our own sweet Nikita, we became intrigued with the story of Dakota and her family.
And then we discovered that Qannik, who is about 9 years younger, not only looks like Dakota, but he has many of the same mannerisms and sounds. We joked how they were long lost twins born a decade apart.
And that made the last few weeks of blog posts and emails particularly difficult.
Tonight, we thank Dakota’s family for giving her the most powerful gift that we dog owners are asked to give. It is terribly cruel that dogs give to us their entire lives and only ask for our help at the end.
We are looking toward the northern sky at a shining new star and know that Dakota is North of the Rainbow Bridge and being greeted by a youthful and happy Nikita. The two young dogs are playing and running, free of the pain brought by Cushings and age.
To Dakota’s family, you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Horrible Hurricane Helene: Why So Bad for WNC?
October 29, 2024
Hurricane Helene was a monster storm, but the way it hit Western North Carolina couldn’t have been much worse.
That was a beautiful tribute and now mum is crying all over again.

We couldn’t a woo’d it any better.
We visited Dakota’s blog and left our condolences.
It hurts our families hearts when one of us leaves but we will be waiting at da Bridge with leashes so we can continue walking together.
Dance among the stars sweet Dakota!
Husky kisses,
Biloxi
Only those of us who have given this last measure of love to our dogs can truly understand the heartache faced by such families. Lovely tribute to Dakota and family.
Your words were so beautiful. Our hearts are saddened and our prayers are with Princess Dakota’s family.
Wow you guys, that was so touching and so true! We do develop strong bonds with pups and people we have and may never meet, they become an important part of our lives. Thank you for being so supportive to Kathie and her family, it means so much to them.
I just know Nikita and Dakota are having fun up there but I also know they are feeling a bit sad because they are watching over everyone they’ve left behind and they can see how much they are hurting and how sad they are. This is so hard for everyone.
From Team Husky to The Thundering Heard ~ we love you guys!
We will definitely miss Dakota. It’s so true what you say about getting attached to pups you’ve never even met.

Wow, what do I say? Thank you, my dear friends. Why do I have more tears than words? Please know how much this means to me. And even if we have not met in real life, the connection is very deep and very real. Getting a Dakota-fix through Qannik will be wonderful as we move forward.

They give so much and ask for so little.
We’re out on the deck and watching the stars. There is a bright sparkly one that we’re sure is Princess Dakota. She’ll be missed by many.
