Our matriarch’s birthday is this Sunday, so we will be celebrating all weekend. Help us wish Miss Cheesy a very Happy 14th birthday!
In May 2008, we received a phone call from a volunteer at Sarge’s Animal Rescue seeking an emergency foster home for a red-headed Siberian Husky tied up behind a foreclosed house. AKC paperwork was found listing her birthday as December 22, 2005, making her the only member of the current Herd with a known birthdate. The Dam’s name was Nikita Natasha, quite appropriate since we had both a Nikita and a Natasha as strong female leaders of our pack at different times.
We named her Cheoah (CHE-o-ah) based on a prophesy we were told shortly before finding her. A Lakota woman said she had a vision we would adopt another dog named Cheoah, the Cherokee word for spirit, so we made the prophesy come true when we gave Miss Cheesy that name. Unfortunately, we didn’t check with the neighboring Cherokee tribe or we would have discovered that the word actually means Otter in Cherokee. Still appropriate as she is the only member of The Herd who loves swimming.
So join us in a birthday celebration weekend. We wish our red head the happiest of 14th birthdays. Her brothers promise to behave as their gift. Well, maybe not behave. That might be too much to ask. Besides, Miss Cheesy is often the instigator of mischief where she can then sit and practice her innocent look while her brothers take the blame.
