We have written about this excellent organization before, but The Herd wants to take a moment to talk about Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation. We just signed up as a sponsor of the annual Downtown Waynesville Dog Walk. Yep, we have walked in the event for the past few years, as evidenced by this newspaper photo from the 2007 walk:
But this year, we decided we needed to go the extra step. We signed up to be a sponsor of the event itself. Yes, we will still be walking in the parade on Saturday, August 8, but we will also be listed on the t-shirts that everyone in the event will be wearing. Is that cool or what?
Why are we such fans of this group? The dog euthanasia rate at our local shelter is down 30% since the organization was founded. In a very rural corner of North Carolina, that is fantastic progress against a very challenging problem. Along with another organization in our county, Haywood Animal Welfare Association, Sarge’s is doing its best to reduce the number of animals that end up euthanized in our shelter. Sarge’s focuses on creating a no-kill shelter and adopting animals from our county shelter while HAWA focuses on spay/neuter clinics.
But more personally, both Qannik and Cheoah came to us via the great people at Sarge’s. And we can not think of two more lovable reasons to support this organization.
So if you are in the area, please join us on August 8th for the always fun dog walk through downtown Waynesville. If you do, come say hello to The Herd. We usually are not to hard to spot.
And – shameless plug – if you can not come, please consider a donation directly to Sarge’s or HAWA. Let them know The Thundering Herd sent you.

Horrible Hurricane Helene: Why So Bad for WNC?
October 29, 2024
Hurricane Helene was a monster storm, but the way it hit Western North Carolina couldn’t have been much worse.
I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Really not hard to spot? can’t imagine why! Good for you for promoting the local shelters. awesome. it takes a really “special” person to own a sibe. that’s probably why they end up in shelters. they look cute as puppies but people don’t know what to expect. i can’t imagine owning 6. i think you need 2 more. 😉
You guys ROCK!!!

When she is out training the Boy later today, I’ll dig through her purse and find momma’s plastic card. She usually doesn’t object to us using it to help other pups.
