A Noise In The Woods
His Royal Highness Little Prince Typhoon Phooey was minding his own business. Sniffing some shrubbery. Digging in a flower bed. Avoiding the human with a brush. Wrestling with his bestest-buddy-ever. And then the snap of a twig. Something moved in the forest. Full alert systems engaged. The mighty hunter is ready.
Read Today's Herd StoryHigh-Stepping Frankie Suave
Frankie Suave has lived with us at Chez Herd for eleven-and-a-half years, so is probably 13 or 14 years old. Don’t cut him any slack, though, because he still walks six miles a day, jumps up into the human bed at night (the only one of us who stays there all night), and keeps the youngsters more or less under control. So, yes, he’s high-stepping senior and doesn’t want anyone to forget it.

After two days of drenching rain, the beautiful cool, sunny days of spring have returned to Chez Herd. His Royal Highness Little Prince Typhoon Phooey declared it a perfect day to nap in the yard. Great plan, but his bestest buddy ever forgot the rule against disturbing royal sleep. That ended with Typhoon chasing Roscoe around the yard, which was what Roscoe wanted in the first place.

Rain has fallen on us for the last two days. And fallen and fallen. Nearly three inches. Hu-Dad reached back to our last sunny day—Thursday—and snatched this photo of Roscoe racing around the yard. We’re hoping to see the sun again today so we can all be crazy outside. Which, Hu-Dad suggests, is better than us being crazy inside.

We all have our daily rituals. For Landon, he does laps around the yard every evening after supper. A celebration of a good meal? A thankfulness for another day at Chez Herd? Or just another Boom Zoom because he can?

As our weather switches day to day from winter to summer and back, we’ve learned to embrace those sunny, spring days. Roscoe decided a nice roll in the grass was warranted and let his inner puppy take over. Sometimes, you just have to cut loose.

With Hu-Dad working on his busyness in his study, he expects us to coordinate our break requests to minimize his interruptions. A certain sleepy senior, though, would have been perfectly happy to extend his nap a bit longer. Don’t worry, though, Frankie Suave was back and napping in no time.

Thanks for all your emails and messages asking if we were okay. High winds yesterday knocked out power for tens of thousands of homes in our area. We lost our power at 4:30 yesterday afternoon and just got it back this morning (Thank you, electric workers!). Hu-Dad kept tripping over us in the dark, but everything is normal here. Well, Siberian crazy normal. Happy Sunday!

Wherever the Trouble Brothers venture, mischief will occur. They plot. They plan. They wreak havoc. All they need now is the perfect theme song to follow them wherever they go. What’s your suggestion?

The trees are covered with buds, the flowers poking their heads above the ground, and the grass is greening. Spring is in the air. Frankie Suave is very interested in proper lawn care, especially the level of tasty bugs and grub. Correction—he meant healthy, not tasty bugs and grub. Right, Frankie? Right?

You would think Roscoe could relax and enjoy a beautiful spring evening, but he’s still working to cross everything off his to do list. What else would explain his scurrying from place to place in the backyard?
