We have written about this fantastic educational center once before, but were able to stop at it yesterday as we were moving up the South Carolina coast. Â Sewee Environmental Education Center is a great museum just north of Charleston that also houses a few Red Wolves. Â The Red Wolf was originally found throughout the Eastern and Central U.S., but was hunted to near extinction. Â A breeding and reintroduction program has been conducted into the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina. Â While we normally do not like to see captive wild animals, in this case, these wolves are a part of the breeding program and are important to the genetic diversity of the reintroduced wolves.
P.S. – As you can imagine, the trail to the red wolves is a human only trail, so The Herd rested comfortably in the S-RV while the humans took the pictures.

Horrible Hurricane Helene: Why So Bad for WNC?
October 29, 2024
Hurricane Helene was a monster storm, but the way it hit Western North Carolina couldnât have been much worse.
our hu-parents went up North to Wolf Sanctuary in WA but the wolves were taking their afternoon nap…They didn’t get great pictures like you did.
We love wolves!!
Wolves are our mom’s most favorite of all wildlife! She is totally obsessed with them! Those red wolves are absolutely gorgeous!
Holly and Khady
We hope that the Red Wolf is able to survive the terrible things that humans do to them! We hate to hear that species are being hunted to extinction!
What beautiful creatures! We too do not like to see the wild in captivity, but sounds like it is there for a good reason.
That is very cool. I like their pointy noses, almost more fox like. Too bad your pack couldn’t visit, that would have been interesting.
Momma has heard of this repopulation program and says it is very interesting. We have only limited success here in the SW with reintroducing wolves to their native lands because of rancher resistance. I bet the herd could have quite a lovely conversation with these cousins, given the opportunity.
Anna is furry funny AND khlever too!
What gorgeous Red Team Wannabes!
Hugz&Khysses,
Khyra
I’m sure she knew you were there!
What a cool place! It sounds like a really well-run program. I hope that they have much success! The wolf pics are awesome, too!
Cool pics. But we’re still confused. Why, exactly, did your parents go to the beach when you could have been frolicking in snow?!? Seriously. What were they thinking? It’s not like you have snow 10 months out of the year, like we do! đ
Happy travels!

Wonderful shots!! We run into quite a few wolves and wolfdogs here in SoCal. Don’t know why…..
Those are some lovely wolves!
ha-woo woo, the humans may have taken the pics, but we know woo interpreted those non-verbal messages for the captions!
Our “hu-Mum” was really happy this morning when she saw yur picturs of our relatives. “Woofs” are her passion, but I’m not sure if they come before or after us Sibes. She’s always telling us about the time she got to hold a six-week-old woof puppy at the Driftwood Wildlife Park in Alberta, near where we live in Dawson Creek BC. (Now closed)
My wife is now demanding that we go there immediately. You don’t by any chance have a Google Map location for them, do you? Their description of their location is a little vague for my navigational tastes.
Great pics, too. Thanks, Thundering Herd!
Pretty niffty that you got to see our great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great grandparents!!
Wooo beautiful wolves, they are very fox like. Nice to hear they are trying to reintroduce them. We have a few here in Spain in small pockets of the country.
Khumbu
Wolves are so beautiful. Thanks for posting the pics.
Very cool. I agree about captive animals but sometimes there are good reasons. Oh how I wish that the wolves would get a foothold here in CO.
Keep having fun! Now’s our turn for big snow, and we can’t escape like you because my dad is still stuck here due to weather-related flight cancellations.
Just wondering, since huskies and malamutes are supposed to be the most “wolflike” dogs, do you see any similarities (besides in appearance) between your dogs and wolves?
You got some great pics of that wolf. Bet the Herd would have enjoyed visiting too.
No sibes involved in Dad’s injury. Just a combination of inattention, a closed door, and eyes that don’t do well to start with:(
Nice wolf pics! How many wolves do they have a Seewee? I can’t tell you how many times we have been by there & have never stopped we will have to change that! The Polar Bear Plunge is going on Saturday here at the beach in case The Herd wants to play in the ocean (not that the outside temp is going to be cold … it is supposed to be 70 on Sat:-) … the water will be cold though)!!
Licks & Nibbles,
Kody & Nia
Not sure how many they have. There were 2 in the exhibit area and at least one we saw in the area behind that. As we understand it, they rotate the wolves who are in the exhibit area so they do not become overly stressed.
Thanks for the Polar Bear plunge invitation, but we have moved up to Huntington Beach for the remainder of the week and will be preparing for our own polar bear plunge – the return home to all of that snow.
