We have complained before about Breedism, the assumption that a Siberian Husky is this poorly behaved wild child. Where does that reputation come from? Sigh. Anyway, we have yet another example clipped out of our local newspaper:
On a totally different topic, we posted this link on Sibernet-L, an internet list-serv for Siberian Husky fans, but we realize that many of you may not have seen it. This is the story of Melvin, a Siberian Husky in the Iditarod (which is running now) as posted in the Onion, one of our favorite off-beat sites.

Horrible Hurricane Helene: Why So Bad for WNC?
October 29, 2024
Hurricane Helene was a monster storm, but the way it hit Western North Carolina couldn’t have been much worse.
My mom says she’d like to see that animal trainer fix me from pulling. I’ve been to several and am not fixed yet, but I’m pretty sure that’s her problem and not mine!

The story about Melvin was a real hoot – or would that be howl?
We are such a misunderstood breed, aren’t we?
Tail wags, the OP Pack
It’s a fact of life we are always mislabeled. The stoopid humans at the Starbuck’s drive-thu think we are wolves. They always say “The wolf lady is here”. What do humans know? Nothing.

I agree with everyone, the ad was meant for the little dog.
Thanks for sharing the article on Melvin!

We got a kick out of Melvin’s story. Poor guy, but hey, he is da new guy on da team. Give him a break.
As for dat ad, I think they was talking about dat wittle thing wid da snarly teeth, not the happy smiling Sibe. Dat Sibe looks like he wouldn’t git into any trouble. Ha Roooooo!
But dat wittle one, I wouldn’t trust it.
Husky kisses,

Poor Melvin…I don’t think he’s out of the ordinary…we do stuff like that all the time. I thinks the media was having a slow day and just used Melvin as their scapegoat….Harooooooo!
Mya Boo Boo
Melvin looks to me like a normal sibe, I mean, I would stop every few minutes to dig in the snow and then go chase something too! Isn’t that normal?
Ha roo roo roo! We saw that article, too, and thought it was a gas!
As per the behavior thing… it looks to ME like the Sibe is being a total angel and that little Yappy is the one who needs some training!
Tail wags,
Storms
Hmmmm..we know that all Sibes are quiet, easily trained, stay-at-home, “why would I want to roam the neighborhood?” dogs. 🙂
At least you’re not the little snack in the picture!

P.S. There was a team of belgians in the Iditarod several years ago. Unfortunately, they didn’t do very well.
Mom and I enjoyed your Melvin link on SiberN*t – we even shared it with a furiend who has some of those beaWOOtiful/handsome Belgian khanines 😉
As fur our behaviours, what fun would we be if we were like all those OTHER khanines?

Poor melvin. Bless his fuzzy heart.
