Hiking with The Herd often has its challenges, but this time of year is particularly difficult. Sure, the heat has been a little challenging the past couple of weeks. And we always have some creatures to deal with that appear in the woods. But right now, there is a distraction that no one can resist.

Horrible Hurricane Helene: Why So Bad for WNC?

Hurricane Helene was a monster storm, but the way it hit Western North Carolina couldn’t have been much worse.

Fresh berries directly from the tree! Who can resist them?
Hmmmm … i have a question: How do you know ones/berries are safe to eat and which ones may be potentially toxic or harmful for the dogs??? I’m always so paranoid out on a hike in the “wild”, especially when my dogs are such hoovers scarfing everything down in sight!
What super shots!!!! Wow – you have blueberries too!!! (Yes! Those were blackberries from our post the other day…yum!) Love seeing the Herd munching on them – should have let Sammie have a few – she’s very bad about stealing strawberries from the garden! (I awoke this am to find that this computer was finally able to bring your site up whoopee! I left it all night – hubby will kill me!) Have a good Thursday!

Dad and I would be SO with you! We LOVE blueberries. blueberries fresh. blueberry pie. blueberry cobbler. blueberry pancakes. blueberry sauced trout. blueberries and ice cream. I am getting all drool-y as mom types this.
O you know how I feel about the berries… and o how my lips are smackin as now I check the bus schedule! You wouldn’t mind a lil gold mixed in on the hike, would you???

Those blueberries don’t look very blue to me!
My dogs do the SAME thing! Their fave is raspberries, and they pick them so gently that they don’t even harm the bush. I wish that we had wild blueberries here. You are LUCKY!
My dogs have a serious problem with mushrooms though. The ones that they munch on in our forest are benign but, about 4 yrs ago, K started sampling mushrooms in a new forest in northwest Colorado. Let’s just say that it was a very dangerous experiment… and she didn’t learn a thing from it. Now, I actually muzzle her in late summer when we’re in forests away from home to keep her from sampling the local fare.
So, warn the Herd about mushrooms, OK?

Ooh – I remember picking wild blackberries once during a University field trip…once you’ve eaten the wild ones straight from the bush, the supermarket ones just never compare!! 🙂

Oooh! We want to come visit! How much better does life get than a hike that includes foodables?!? How far are you from Chapel Hill? My Granny and Grandpa live there, but we’ve never been to NC. (Mom has, obviously, but has said something about me not fitting in the overhead luggage racks, and the House With Wheels (with the tow car) is too long to be legal in NC…)

TD and Ciara love blueberries and get a few every morning while Dad is having breakfast. You just have to be careful not to step on them, or you can some interesting pawprints on the white rug.

Hehe, lucky Herd. That brings back memory when our mommy found out the blueberries that she was waiting for were MIA one after another as it ripened — what happened to them? Eaten by Elmo. He was caught right handed when he put the last berry in his mouth. To taunt our mommy, he even licked his lips and had this “delicious” smile on his face. Sigh, brothers…what do you do with them…?
Delicious! Walking and berry picking, now that’s fun!!

Mmmm, we pass a lot of blackberries on our walk, but fortunately, Cabana doesn’t know what they are. We have raspberries and strawberries growing in our yard, and she hasn’t sampled those either. If she ever finds out what’s growing right beneath her nose, there will be no going back.
This post made our momma smile – lots! She had a little spaniel, Miss Savannah Leigh, who would go berry picking in our raspberry patch every summer. She always knew where to find the best ones before we did!

One berry, two berry, pick me a blueberry! I thought it was tough getting mine to walk past sweet grass! I am guessing The Herd is pretty efficient at removing those berries!
