While at the beach last week and doing a day trip to Charleston, SC, along Highway 17, we decided to stop at the Sewee Environmental Education Center. We are so glad, after driving past the place many times, we decided to take the opportunity to stop. Why? We got to meet this lady:
Look carefully in the background of the picture above, and you will notice a second wolf passing in the picture. This was the only appearance of that second wolf and it was very fleeting.
This majestic creature can only be found in the wild in one place – Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina. Originally, the Red Wolf was found throughout the Southeastern U.S., into the mid-Atlantic states, and into central-Southern US.
These wolves are captive, but are part of the Wildlife Services breeding program to help strengthen the population at Alligator River. We were able to sit quietly and watch her for quite some time.
This last picture was the only one taken without a zoom lens. After we had sat quietly for a while, she finally ventured over within a few feet of us to “sniff” us out. Stunning.
P.S. – We mentioned yesterday, but will repeat our message. KB has some stunning pictures and VIDEO of a mountain lion. We highly recommend going and viewing.

Horrible Hurricane Helene: Why So Bad for WNC?
October 29, 2024
Hurricane Helene was a monster storm, but the way it hit Western North Carolina couldn’t have been much worse.
That must have been amazing to see her like that, and for her to come so close.
She is so beautiful!!! 🙂

Just gorgeous. We don’t see them anywhere up this way. Caught that KB post, it was amazing…
She is a pretty girl!
Absolutely beautiful! I just love wolves, and have often been told I am part wolf! You pups are lucky you got to meet a wolf. I will have to convince my human to take me to that park so I can meet and play with the wolves!
I love the photo of the “fleeting wolf” – it has a supernatural Spirit to it!

It’s sad that they have dwindled down so much.
I don’t know about the up close and personal photo, especially when you told us there was no zoom action involved. Wow, while I’m posting about “pretend wolves” you saw the real thing!

Tail wags, Phantom and Thunder
What a fantastic looking wolf! We saw some in Dublin Zoo the other day but they were nowhere near as attactive as that fantastic red wolf! Great photos you took!
What a beautiful animal. We visited a Wolf Conservation Center once and it was quite an experience. Perhaps I’ll blog about it one day when I’m short on blog fodder.
It’s sad that these magnificent animals have had their habitats reduced to almost nothing. I hope they can make a comeback.
