Bear Bell Effectiveness

Sunday morning hike
Arriving back at Chez Herd in the Jeep after our Sunday morning hike.

We live in bear country, so encounters with black bears are not uncommon. We have often seen bears during our hikes and on our land. One even climbed the tree right beside the hu-dad’s study (we might have scared it with a little noise).  For some examples of our black bear encounters, you can see our posts here, here, here, and even a story without pictures here.

jingling with excitement
I am just jingling with excitement.

During our Sunday morning hike, Qannik and Typhoon were our official bear bell wearers, jingling down the trail so that we didn’t surprise any bears. But when we loaded back up in the Jeep, hu-dad forgot to take the bear bells back off, so we were ringing during the entire ride back home.

just jingling
Ok, maybe I am just jingling.

Many people question bear bell effectiveness, but we want to explain why we know that they are quite effective! That’s right, we wore our bear bells all the way home and not once – not a single time – did we see a black bear in the Jeep with us. Proof positive that bear bells work!

make it stop
Could you make it stop?  Yes, the ringing, but the bad jokes, too.

    Love Typhoon’s sarcasm.

Love my bear bells. Ruby and I both wear one when we go out on a hike. We have lots of them in the northeast and like to play it safe.

Mom sez: If the bell wearers were to have their heads out the windows of the jeep on the ride home, I’ll bet there wouldn’t be a single bear trying to crowd the jeep off the road! Jus’ sayin’!

LOL! Ty and Buster wear their bear bells when we’re hiking in bear country too, be we never thought to leave them on in the RV! We’re going to have to give that a try. You can never be too careful when it comes to bear encounters.
