A Ton of Dog Food

Exactly how long does it take for The Thundering Herd to go through a ton of dog food (yes, that would be 2,000 pounds or 907 kg)?

Mmmmmm. A ton of dog food.

Mmmmmm. A ton of dog food.

A reader asked a great question yesterday, “How many bags of food does The Herd go through in a month?” Well, Nikki, we had to go do some calculating to answer that question and thought we would post it so everyone could see.

This post is making me so hungry.

This post is making me so hungry.

We have our food shipped to us, so we just had to look up the number of shipments. So, let’s see – 9 shipments this year. 4 bags in each shipment. 13 kg in each bag.

Wait – we need more toes on our paws to do this. Give us a second. Ah . . .

468 kilograms of dog food which is just over 1,000 pounds – or a half ton of dog food a year.

I want my share.

I want my share!

In case you are curious, we each get about 1 3/4 cups of Acana Regional Flavors every day (yes, as we mentioned yesterday, that is an affiliate link and we do receive a small payment if you buy from that link). We have tried a lot of foods over the years and highly recommend a high quality food. Though the food looks expensive at first glance, you can feed less of it because it is so packed full of calories and nutrients.

Sorry, Qannik.

We want to wish all of you a very Happy and Safe New Year. In our usual tradition, we will be going to sleep around 9 or 10 o’clock rather than staying up til midnight. Shrug. It is the way we roll.

Happy New Year Thundering Herd! Our little pack will try to stay up. The baby Bolt will probably be the only one who makes it….btw, we are slowly trying Acana. Our Huskies are no different than any other fluff butts. They have sensitive stomachs, and we have to be mindful of what goes in. If not, what comes out can be well, gross! Here’s to another year of Husky hijinks and hilarity!

    I’m trying to math!
I want to figure out how many cups in a ton.
My “Hyena Pack” goes through 21 cups a day. So, if the Thundering Herd goes through 10.5 total cups a day, and uses a half ton a year, then that means we use an actual ton of food a year.

I just figured out where all my money disappears to.

Love, love, love reading your blog!!!!

Interesting way of looking at feeding. My guys get about the same cup per day as you do. And people always say they must eat a lot having 4. I tell them not really. People don’t understand a husky’s metabolism is different then other dogs. I also say to people do they look starved on a cup and half a day? Plus our vet does a report card at our visits and 3 are ideal weight. Boo who is 13 now is slowly loosing some weight. We went in December and she lost 4lbs. I was happy. Every bit she sheds helps her with her arthritis. Anyways, Happy New Year to you!

Happy New Year to all of you at Sibe Quentin from all of us at Camp Corgi. We always say we celebrate the New Year with New York and then go to bed.

That seems like a lot of food for 1 month. If for 1 month, I work it out as 5.73#/day/dog, More like 6 months worth, no?

Ah, no – we clarified in our post but we meant in a year. A half ton of food a year. (Though Qannik really likes your suggestion).

This is Nikki’s mom…. How do you handle what I call “poop patrol” ? That ton of food equates to a lot of poop ( finding it. Picking it up. Disposing of it ) we have three dogs and not nearly the large space you guys have. But I have more than once stepped in the lab/ husky mix Caseys poop. I know it’s him. He is the one that so reminds me of Frankie!!!

Fortunately, with a good quality food, there is less waste than you would expect. But the short answer is that there is a regular harvest and removal from Sibe Quentin. Like the delicate way we worded that?

Silky, Nacho and I will be up until about 1am because of so much fireworks here in Manila. Looks like shock and awe over Baghdad!
Happy New Year to you all.
