Just a Little Noise

So far this year, we have been fairly quiet with our spring weather. Yesterday, though, we had just a little noise from a small thunderstorm.

For long time blog readers, you know that Frankie is the only member of The Herd that has issues with thunder. He comes to the hu-dad before the storm hits and asks for his Thundershirt. With the comfort of the shirt, he is calm enough for the hu-dad to ask him to do things around the house. That is important because a dog doing tasks will not have the time to focus on the thunder.

Woo, that one was a little close.

With a few tasks done around the house and my body armor secure, I even fell asleep with the storm still going.

Frankie, you and hu-dad have an excellent strategy. YoYoMa has the same issues and over time he has learned to refocus on tasks and basic training and to rest at momma’s side so well that he no longer needs the Thundershirt.

Our Nala is the same way with storms and we are having really bad ones here tonight in NY. She has her Thunder shirt on too!

Ice sez: I do NOT like thunderstorms one bit. Unlike our Ayla, before she went to the Rainbow Bridge. She LOVED thunderstorms, silly girl. She used to stand out in the middle of the back yard, in the pouring rain, looking up at the sky, waiting for the crashes of thunder, and the flashes of lightning.

We may have to try the shirt with Ciara, her t-storm anxiety seems to be on the rise. And now monkey see, monkey do – Lightning comes to warm Mom’s feet when he hears the noise. Phantom doesn’t hear the storms for the most part, but his anxiety comes into play in advance of the storms:(

Glad Frankie finds his armor works well.

One of our GSDs is also not a fan of thunder (or fireworks), and the Thundershirt really helps her. Instead of trying to fit under the desk/behind the dresser, she’ll actually sleep on top of the bed with us. We also give her Rescue Remedy when the body armor doesn’t cut it all the way.

We have one dog at our house who enjoys the comfort of the Thundershirt from time to time, too! Ours, of course, is pink!

A friend uses a thundershirt for her dog in addition to music. She bought an iCalmDog (http://throughadogsear.com/icalmdog/) and puts her girl in a secure place away from windows until the storm leaves.

Curious to know how he asks for it specifically? Does he have a particular bark that means ‘Dad, a storm is coming can I have my thundershirt please?” as opposed to “Dad, give me food’ or some other Siberian related immediate need?

He typically just comes up to the hu-dad with the “look.” Not sure how else to describe it.
