Qannik Is Going Bald (With A Little Help)

What is a giant cotton ball supposed to do when he has a bald spot? Qannik says “Eat Peanut Butter!” If that makes no sense, read on for an explanation.

Mmmmmmm - peanut butter.

Mmmmmmm – peanut butter.

While our Q-Tip is deep in a peanut butter trance, we will explain things. Our Q has always strived for uniqueness, and that includes mysterious ailments. When he first came to Chez Herd, he had a weird Urinary Tract Infection that most common antibiotics would not touch. Our vet had to prescribe – and our pharmacist had to locate – an antibiotic that had not been used in decades. Shortly after, his UTI had cleared.

Since then, Q has found new and creative ways to confuse both the Hu-Dad and the vets. Recently, he developed a skin infection that we have been treating for a few weeks. While things have been improving, we hadn’t cleared things up, so the clippers came out.

A haircut just like Hu-Dad!

Yes, we had to remove a big patch of hair so that we can get to the root of the problem – literally. We will be applying some topical medications – directly to the skin now that it is exposed – for the next couple of weeks. Hopefully, that will solve whatever is getting underneath Q’s skin – or, rather, on it.

To help Q remain calm while getting a close haircut, the vet gave him a peanut butter stuffed Kong. So let’s ask Q if he minded being shaved?

Mmmmmmmmm - peanut butter.

Mmmmmmmmm – peanut butter.

Let us know how things work out! When all else fails checkout the meds at Tractor Supply Co! I have used some of their products with success!

Mom sez: Poor Qannik, I hope the hair DOES come back. AND, that the Chlorhexidine DOES clear up the problem. Our experience with shaved to the skin is that it never DOES grow back “the way it was”, there’s always a noticeable patch left, but it’s still better than fighting a skin infection. Good luck to both you and Qannik, Kirk!

Are you using the Chlorhexidine, and/or something else? Will you let us know what any skin tests reveal? Sweet pets and more pb to Qannik.

The skins tests did not reveal anything unusual, just a normal level of bacteria. We are going with a treatment of chlorhexidine/climbazole/phytosphingosine salicyloyl every other day (a standard skin infection treatment). On alternate days, we are applying Neo-Predef – a standard hot spot powder. And, of course, we shaved to give the skin the chance to air out.

If it isn’t one oddity, it’s another! Shoulda took the strip on up and back, reverse mohawk to the tail, then a nice spiked collar 😛

Get better Q-Tip……or are you now just Tip……since you’re missing cotton!

Skin issues can be pretty frustrating to unravel. Keep us posted on sweet Q.

Hope you solve it. One of mine got a bizarre infection that kept cropping up all over. Not hot spots. Something different. Skin scrapings finally yielded some odd type of fungus. Responded well to Chlorhexidine.

Good to hear – Chlorhexidine is the “mousse” we keep referring to.

Oh Qannik! I really hope you get all better really fast! ????

Oh, Qannik – those peanut butter Kongs are great, aren’t they? They calm our Jordy down when he is left alone. Paws and finger crossed that the new medicines will work. And it’s good that Qannik gave Hu-dad the job of keeping the Kong from rolling away – I’m sure he did that to keep Hu-dad calm. 😉

AAWW Quannik! I REALLY hope the peanut butter stuffed Kong calmed your nerves while Hu-Dad cut your hair. I hope that very soon the infection will go away and your hair grows back sweetie!

The haircut was courtesy the vet. The Hu-Dad just helped to keep the Kong from rolling away.
