Blowing Coat At All The Wrong Times

Twice a year, Siberian Huskies shed their undercoat – a process known as blowing coat. Just don’t try to tell them when those two times should occur.

You don't actually expect me to follow rules, especially about blowing coat?

You don’t actually expect me to follow rules?

Siberian Huskies have a tough outer coat that repels water, snow and ice. They also have an inner coat that creates their ability to handle cold weather. That inner coat blows out twice a year, typically in the transition from summer to winter and vice versa.

Twice a year wouldn’t be so bad, despite the incredible amount of fur that comes out, except in a household of six Siberian Huskies. Hu-Dad swears that The Herd has a conspiracy afoot to make sure that at least one member is always blowing coat.

Guess whose turn it is?

Guess whose turn it is?

Typhoon is the most fun because he screams at the mere thought of being brushed. Seriously. A blood curdling, shrill scream. And if a brush actually touches him, he gets significantly louder. Plucking – a hobby all Siberian Husky owners consider the ultimate pleasure – brings a similar result. The result is that the Munchkin is walking around right now dropping fur in his path.

Must be somewhere I haven't dropped fur yet.

Norwegian Elkhound parents love to pluck as well. Tokyo understands Typhoon’s pain.

Eddie is not a huge fan of brushing (he’ll walk away) or plucking (he’ll tolerate one or two plucks, then looks offended and walks away), but he loves being scratched, so I’ll take him on the porch and do a two-handed scratch along his back and haunches and get out as much as I can.

I can take the scream, LET ME PLUCK!

I call it “popcorning”. The big fluffs of fur that fall off my Sibes pops out like popping corn. I could sit and pluck their hair for hours, but then I’d probably have the police at my door, wondering who was being tortured. Anytime the plucking starts the grumbling, growling and eventually full out shrieks start. It’s their way of making me stop any progress I’ve made in the quest to banish hair from every inch of the house! Oh Huskies…….

Mom sez: Ahhh, yes! From Chinook, back in 1976, then Kiah, then Ayla & Ice, and now to Ebby, our house has been “padded and insulated” with discarded Siberian “woollies”, and there doesn’t seem to be any particular season or time of year for this to happen. Typhoon looks much like I can expect Ebby to begin looking almost anytime now.

Koda “tolerates” and I say that extremely loosely, so loosely that it’s a big joke, when I pluck his extra tufts….but the look I get is “take that brush and … ” well you the rest. He feels that brushes, like TyTy, that unless it goes in Mommy’s hair, there is absolutely no need for a brush to be within 90bazillion miles of him.

We here in Va Beach are getting the winter storm warnings for this coming weekend, So Koda says bring it on! And is sending happy snow vibes to ya’ll too.

My long coat husky sheds “whenever” his system wants to shed.

We call ’em husky feathers and will take that over the other hair/fur types that spread everywhere.

It’s true…. us Akita pawrents find great pleasure in plucking also ❤

Ah yes, Plucking, a real joy. Great fun for the owner, less so by the wives who watch the clumps of hair being dropped on the floor.
