We had the hottest day at the house in three years which led to an event that we can only describe as the massive wading pool failure.
What is that weird thing?
If you haven’t figured it out already, Hu-Dad is geeky about lots of things and weather is one of them. We have our own weather station at Sibe Quentin that sends data out to all sorts of interested folks including the National Weather Service (EW1053 for the weather geeky folks out there). So when we say that we recorded the highest temperature we have seen since 2013 – we mean actually at the house. Of course, we don’t get much sympathy when we say that high was 80.1ºF / 26.7ºC, but we honestly have not seen 80º weather in three years. Whew!
This weird thing smells funny.
A reader commented yesterday about wading pools and Hu-Dad decided we needed one. Shortly after noon, this blue thing appeared in Sibe Quentin and was filled with water. Where else would a bunch of hot huskies want to be?

As it turns out, Cheoah – fittingly, the Cherokee word for Otter – was the only one of us who had any interest in getting wet. And she briefly waded through it twice and then ignored it for the rest of the day. The rest of us had the exact same reaction as Typhoon.
That thing is a monster, sis. Be careful.
Once again, we have foiled a clever Hu-Dad plan.

Your hottest day was 80? Where do you live? I believe it’s in the mountains somewhere, correct? I guess that would be hot for a mountain area. It was 103 here last Friday. Thinking about moving to Alaska.
My husky, Two, went swimming once and only once. After that, wouldn’t go near water and hated every bath he had. I miss him more than I could ever put into words.
Yes, we live at nearly a 5,000 foot elevation in the far Western North Carolina Mountains – right on the Eastern edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

I think the water-caution is a common husky thing. My Eddie (who looks a lot like Frankie and Typhoon) loves to swim in the lake (and there are many lakes around here), but he needed to be taught. The first few times I tried to persuade him to get in he’d only go in a few inches, then refuse to go further. When he was about a year old we were visiting friends who had a lab who was *leaping* from the deck chasing toys (as labs do), and after much internal debate (Friend! vs scary water) Eddie decided to wade in after his buddy, and soon was swimming. At first he was paddling frantically with his nose up huffing, but he quickly got the hang of it and now loves swimming, even if the water is near-freezing (within days of break-up or freeze-up). He’s tried to teach his various friends (most are husky mixes) to feel the love, most will eventually go in but prefer to stick closer to the shore (two will just lie down in 4″ of water to wet their bellies).
Greetings from hot Southern Spain. We have had many pools over the years, many have failed to live up to the reputation of being doggie pools (and still are, 2 failures at the moment). We are not big water dogs, even though Leonbergers are water dogs Kyra will only get her ankles wet. Khumbu, the only Sibe, will not swim but you can not keep him out of water to cool down. Throw some treats in, throw a toy in and boom you have our attention. Another big BUT is we only go in on our return from a walk (during our walks we get to paddle in water channels along the way). Never ever, ever, at any other point of the day do we enter the pool. Give the gang time, throw some treat or toys in and hopefully they will love it. Being Sibes, it will take time for them to come around to your way of thinking. When they think it’s their idea, we here in Spain are sure it will be a winner 🙂
Khumbu, Kyra, Rita
Ooh dear – I know that feeling. It has been unseasonably hot here for a few weeks. I thought Dashi might like a big tub of water so carefully got a large plastic tub out under the trees and filled it up. His Majesty decided it was unsafe, unsanitary and would remain untouched. *sigh*
We have one too for our dogs. Bruce loves ot, but Penny does not. Apparently my friend we got Penny fromy said that Penny would jump into her little pond that had goldfish in and couldn’t get out. I think if I was thinking Penny to go in the pool we would have to put fish in it, but if we did that Bruce would eat them. The Brucey likes the fishy lol. It was 92 here in MI and we definitely had our pool out. I will have to say that we were in the house with the air conditioner more than outside. Hugs and kisses to the herd.
I was just wondering about this. Then I thought Hmmm, six wet huskies, probably not the best plan.
During Woofstock this year over here, I managed to get Leena in the creek for the first time ever. Last water experience for her was 2+ years before that when I put here in the South Holston river, all the way up to 1″ of water. She freaked and just froze, I had to lift her back out of the water.
My fur kids would have thought that was one awesome water bowl!!!
Two of mine love the pool and are always playing and digging in it. Toss in a few toys. Another thing to get them going is to take a real bone (rib/marrow type) let them see it and get a good whiff … and drop it in. They really want that bone and will invent some pretty good ways to get at it. My oldest one just stands in it but my others all play in it. One even brings toys to the pool (sticks, pices of wood, … pine cones) and drops them in to smash them around with her paws.
I immediately thought of Cheoah when I read this. Don’t give up. Curiosity might draw her back and soon she will be happily splashing.
