Breakfast in Bed

Yesterday, Typhoon scored breakfast in bed. Quite the feat since he was already outside for his morning bathroom before breakfast was served.

Did somebody say breakfast

Did somebody say breakfast?

A little set-up to understand the story. Inside the bedroom are six crates – one for each member of The Herd. Sometimes the crate doors are open, sometimes the doors are closed, but each member of The Herd sleeps in their respective crates at night and periodically during the day.

Outside on the covered porch are also six crates – one for each member of The Herd. Just like the indoor crates, each member naps periodically in their respective crates. Most importantly, breakfast and dinner are served inside those outdoor crates.

why eat in crates?

And why do we eat our meals in our crates?

By feeding inside our crates, we each get to eat at our own speed without worry that some other pup may try to steal an extra bite or two. Hu-dad says this arrangement also guarantees the peace.

Thus, the first sign that a meal is going to be served is Hu-dad telling us to Kennel Up – meaning we are to get inside our proper crate and let Hu-dad shut the door.

In case you are curious, only Qannik gets into the wrong crate. Apparently, he is unable to read our names because each crate has the owner’s name on it. Hu-dad also says Q has cotton for brains, whatever that means.

does not want to go to crate

But what happens if some pup doesn’t want to go in his crate?

Which brings us to yesterday morning. Hu-dad says kennel up. Dogs run into crates. Doors are shut. On five crates.

Typhoon is sitting in the middle of the porch.

“Typhoon, Kennel Up.”

Hu-dad gets a look just like the picture above.

Hu-dad steps out on the porch to guide Typhoon to his crate . . . and Typhoon makes a break around Hu-dad, through the kitchen, through the great room, into the bedroom, and right inside his indoor crate.

didn't say which kennel

You said, “Kennel Up.” You didn’t say which kennel.

Hu-dad thought about it for a minute, prepared breakfast, and fed Typhoon breakfast in his bedroom crate. And that is how Typhoon got breakfast in bed.

keeping on your toes

Just keeping you on your toes, Hu-dad.

(I’m the one who asked all the questions the other day…) So how do you train them “kennel up”? Did the newer dogs like Frankie and Typhoon train faster by watching the other ones? Do you train Natasha first? How do you go about training 6 dogs at a time, especially for a breed like this not known for its cooperative spirit? What other commands do they know? When Qannik gets in the wrong crate (which is hysterical), who gets him out – does the real owner growl at him, do you have to pull him out? Looking forward to more posts on these kinds of details!

Wonder what prompted Typhoon to decide he wanted breakfast in bed, rather than with the rest of the Herd. Oh well, we all know how “quirky” a SiberMind can be at times. I suppose Ty is as entitled to his “quirky” mind as anyotherSibe!

Thank you hu~dad for the longer blog we do so enjoy them. I love the crate idea but as a long term sibe junkie you used to feed in different rooms which you indicated worked, I was wondering why you changed and if you find this more productive overall? And typhoon, he is showing the guile and smarts of the queen his mentor, you may be in trouble here lol

Very good memory. Yes, we used to feed in rooms in the old house. When we moved to this house a couple of years ago, everyone now eats outside on the porch (because we have enough porch!).
