A Fading Cheesewhiz Just Needs Sleep

We had a nice long walk to take some of the excess energy out of the younger members of The Herd, but it also resulted in a fading Cheesewhiz.

Just resting my eyes (but a fading Cheesewhiz)

Just resting my eyes (but a fading Cheesewhiz)

The younger dogs were full of energy and mischief, so Hu-Dad decided a nice long walk was in order. Cheoah refuses to consider herself a senior dog, so insists on going on all walks (as opposed to Kiska and Qannik who sometimes wish us well on our adventures). The redhead matched the youngsters step by step, but showed her fatigue upon our return.

Cheesewhiz out.

Cheesewhiz out.

Cheeze, I know the feeling! Leena does the same to me! By the time I got back to the car today after what could only be called a walk to the end of a road for yall, my back, hip and feet were killing me. When she got back in the car and I fell in, she looked at me like “Did I break my human? I think he needs kisses!”….

Subsequently, I think our jaunt thru PetSmart resulted in a kiss for every step we took!

    Rest Cheoah!

Cheese you’re not sleeping, you’re checking out the inside of your eyelids, right? It’s funny for us to watch a dog’s head bobbing in and out of sleep….not so funny to the dog’s I’m sure. Rest up Cheese. Those pups will need to be supervised again tomorrow!

How old is she now? Since losing Shelby, Maddox and I have been walking maniacs. I am amazed at how much our endurance has improved. He will be 11 soon and I hope very much he will be like Cheesewhiz. Senior? What senior?

The mystery of Cheoah’s age – She came to live at Chez Herd right at 10 years ago (come May). She was found tied up behind a foreclosed house, abandoned by the previous owners, so we don’t know a lot of details. According to AKC paperwork in the house, she was 2 1/2 at the time, so would be 12 1/2 now. But, we were never sure the papers belonged to her and guessed she might be a little younger. So, she is at least 11 and possibly as old as 12 1/2.

Then her keeping up with the kids is impressive! I lost Shelby at almost 13 but the last two years she just didn’t last but hardly anything on walks. She was healthy right until the last 2 years and then became supreme floor potato and was happy – until I tried to take Maddox on walks. I miss her. I miss her mouth, her yammering and her attitude, but now that it is just me and Maddox, we are burning up the miles. I just hope I am graced with his presence and his good health for many years to come – he is much fitter and healthier at almost 11 than she was.

Somebody has to supervise the youngins!!
Does she have any arthritis or other issues??

Also need an update on Kiska & Q-tips health please!

    • The Thundering Herd on March 25, 2018 at 8:12 pm

She has some minor arthritis in her spine, but something that has not required medications so far. She gets a periodic laser treatment if her joints get stiff.

Her only medical issue over the years has been a blown CCL (ACL in humans) which required TPLO surgery.

Kiska and Q continue to do well, if aging. They walk with us when they can, and stay at home when they prefer to avoid the walks.

Gorgeous girl!! That is me tired ”young” dog. Get your beauty sleep so you can keep up with the juniors. No need to join the seniors until you have too. Love to all the Herd. I start my day reading about them puts a smile on my face.
