Good news for our big boy, Kodiak. Long time readers will remember that when we first adopted Kodiak, we discovered that he was heartworm positive and had to go through the difficult treatment. Fortunately, he came through that with flying colors and began adding weight, topping out around 60 lbs (27 kg).
When we entered this summer, though, Kodiak’s coat became dry and brittle and he began losing weight, dropping to 57.3 lbs (26 kg). All of the medical test we ran came back with the conclusion about 3 weeks ago that he was healthy, though his thyroid tests came in a little lower than we prefer (1.8, still well within normal ranges of 1.0 to 4.0). But hypothyroidism would exhibit itself as weight gain, not weight loss, so that did not appear to be the issue. We made the decision to just monitor his weight.
As of yesterday’s weigh-in at the vet, Kodiak came in at 59 lbs (almost 27kg) and his coat has regained its sheen.
Who knows what was up, but our big boy appears to be healthy and happy. Glad to see, buddy!

Horrible Hurricane Helene: Why So Bad for WNC?
October 29, 2024
Hurricane Helene was a monster storm, but the way it hit Western North Carolina couldn’t have been much worse.
Maybe he was just trying to give you a scare so he could get more treats?
Steve

GREAT! Way to go Kodiak! Handsome devil!
He can have some of Juno’s weight tho… She came to me at 1 years old (about) and was 53 lbs. she was still young, the rescue group told me she should gain 2 or 3 more lbs and that would be her normal weight. Only because she was such a loon around Mr. Wild Dingo, we had him constantly giving her treats until one day i weighed her and she was 67 lbs! that was way too much. i got her down to 62 last month during the Fun Match. I think she should weigh about 55-58 tops. Is that about right?
Salmon fish oil has helped my GSD’s very dry coat a LOT! that and 1 400IU of vit E capsule on their kibble which they just eat as if it was kibble.
Woooos! We are all glad to hear he is doing well, some good news in the doggy blogging community!

Well that’s good news. We don’t like sickness with no explanation.

I’ve heard a rumor that a lack of squirrel chasing can result in a dull coat. Maybe he’s sneaking out at night to chase squirrels and that is why his coat is getting better.
Just thinking outside the box,
Bricey (who is learning to put his toys back IN the box)
He looks great to us – maybe he was just staying trim for all the hikes he gets to go on.
Woos, the OP Pack
That is good news — glad to hear it!
Glad woo are staying well, Kodiak. Did woor humans give woo more treats so that woo would gain the weight back? My humans always want to put more weight on me…

Yippee, Kodiak. We are glad you got yourself turned around. Stay well!

Mya Boo Boo
That must be such a huge relief. It’s no fun worrying about our pups.
Way to go Kodiak! Glad the thyroid is OK – it can be sooooo complicated to try to adjust its levels, especially if its not ‘classical’ hypothyroidism. We have long experience.
I think he needs more Happy Hearts!
Grrrreat news!
