The Revolt is Over

Thanks for all of your emails yesterday, but just wanted to be clear.  No, The Herd did not revolt (they need us humans to deliver their food and scratch ears).  The squirrels did not invade.  The mountains did not collapse.  And the mounds of shedding hair did not clog our computers.  It was far more mundane than that.

Our website host crashed.

Starting at some point yesterday morning, our webhost had a series of power failures that ended up bringing down most – if not all – of their servers.  The outage affected hundreds of websites, many of them commercial e-commerce sites.  The webhost was very responsive and tried to keep us informed through the day and night, but it has taken hours to restore all of the functionality.

Late last night, the “static content” (fixed web pages or html) were restored.  But the “dynamic content” (blogs and comments which are programmed in php) did not return until this morning.  Unlike Blogger.com or WordPress.com, our blog literally resides on our website host servers.  Fortunately, all of our data was perfectly safe and the entire website, including the history of the blog, is still there.

There are still a few issues, but the most noticeable will affect those of you who comment and suddenly discover you are back on a “to be approved” status.  The way the site works, once I approve your comment, you can then continue to comment without specific approval (unless you fill out the comment identification form differently, such as a different email address).  But that history appears to be lost (the comments are all still there, just the approvals lost).  Hopefully that will get fixed as well, but if you get put into an approval queue, we will approve as quickly as possible and then things should be back to normal.  At least, Siberian normal.

Pretty boring stuff, huh?  Anyway, we are back and are hoping that the site will be back to 100% by tomorrow.

In the meantime, many of you missed yesterday’s post, so go back and enjoy it!

I spent quite a while cussing my new computer because it wouldn’t access your site. It had been a frustrating learning-curve day, not made any better by my dear husband’s wise remark, “Why didn’t you just get a Mac?” Now I know at least one thing couldn’t be blamed on the new computer.

BTW: I have no idea why I didn’t look at Macs. I guess all those years of needing to be compatible with work files just stunned my brain.

I was wondering what was up, and this is good news! Sorry for the hassle, but Blogger outages sure bring us joy from time to time as well. Nothing is bullet proof it seems.

We have been having problems with a lot of blogs lately and our pc, we are trying to catch up with everyone now. We are glad you are back on. We tried to look here yesterday but couldn’t get your page up. We just commented on the previous post and it seemed to go on ok.
